It Rained Today!
This morning I awoke to a gentle rain outside my bedroom window. It put a smile on my face, even before I opened my eyes. I am one of those nuts that likes a good rainy day from time to time. In almost every place I have lived, rain has been a normal part of each month’s weather forecast. When it comes to weather (and many other things too) California is an awesome place to live. But, it doesn’t rain! Just like the famous song, “It never rains in southern California….” Now we know that is an exaggeration, even the song says when it rains, man it pours! What is curious to me, even with so little rain, when it does rain, people call it “bad weather.”
What is interesting from a biblical perspective, rain, and showers are generally representative of blessings from God. “I will make them and the places all around My hill a blessing; and I will cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be showers of blessing.” (Ezek 34:26) “God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things which we cannot comprehend. For He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth'; Likewise to the gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.” (Job 37:5-6) Like the thousands of drops falling from the heavens, God’s blessings shower down upon us from His throne on high! Jesus said, “that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matt 5:45) The truth is, we could not live without either the sun or the rain, or the thousands of other blessings God showers upon mankind. Even those who are “evil” or “unjust” receive blessings from the hand of God.
Rain is even a testimony of the existence and goodness of God. “Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness." (Acts 14:17) “You visit the earth and water it, You greatly enrich it; The river of God is full of water; You provide their grain, For so You have prepared it. You water its ridges abundantly, You settle its furrows; You make it soft with showers, You bless its growth.” (Ps 65:9-10)
"Rain down, you heavens, from above, And let the skies pour down righteousness; Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, And let righteousness spring up together. I, the LORD, have created it.” (Isa 45:8) Dear God in heaven, thanks so much for every blessing that showers down from heaven, we know You and we love You. Let it rain!
